Seadragon

Leafy and weedy seadragons are found only in the ocean waters off the southern and western coasts of Australia. The weedy and leafy seadragons grow to a length of about 18 inches and 14 inches, respectively.

Leafy and weedy seadragons have spines that are used for defense. They swim through the water by rapidly oscillating their small, almost-translucent fins and using their tail as a rudder.

Seadragons are threatened by habitat destruction, poaching and becoming trapped as bycatch.

Our Seadragons: Even during non-feeding times you can see our sea dragons in the Tropic Pacific Gallery cruising around their exhibit searching for live food.

Our animals are part of the Aquarium’s living collection and may be transferred to another zoo, aquarium, or other facility. The life expectancy of each animal varies by species and may or may not be replaced with the same species. These decisions are based on the need to enhance a particular exhibit or gallery, for educational purposes, to contribute knowledge of captive animal husbandry, or to provide research opportunities.
