Zebra Shark

Sharks are found in all parts of the world’s ocean. These animals have a skeleton made of cartilage rather than the hard bone that is found in most other vertebrates.

Sharks are top predators, and while many are thought to prey on man, they prefer to stick to the local variety of fish and small mammals. Shark attacks on humans are extremely rare. More people are harmed annually by dogs, crocodiles and even pigs than by sharks.

Sharks’ main threats are overfishing, shark finning and intentional killing due to perceived danger.

Our Sharks: Did you know our zebra shark, Fern, has been trained to flip over onto her back? Our aquarists use this technique to safely inspect her during check-ups.

Our animals are part of the Aquarium’s living collection and may be transferred to another zoo, aquarium, or other facility. The life expectancy of each animal varies by species and may or may not be replaced with the same species. These decisions are based on the need to enhance a particular exhibit or gallery, for educational purposes, to contribute knowledge of captive animal husbandry, or to provide research opportunities.
